Halloween treats for rescued animals

If you turned the page on your ADI calendar yesterday, you’ll be looking today at Smith, the huge lion we rescued from a circus in Peru, bounding up onto a platform to grab a pumpkin (below).  Yes, it’s that time of year again for tricks, treats and faboolous fun for the residents at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary.

The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary in South Africa has provided a place of loving kindness to animals from all over the world – Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, Armenia, Kuwait, Israel, France, and South Africa itself.

The lions and tigers escaping circus cages on trucks or unnatural lives in basements on chains or abandonment as pets, cannot be returned to the wild, so we provide a life as close to nature as possible.

Our rescued lions and tigers roam huge, natural habitats of several acres, and we fill their lives with treats, surprises and fun.  This includes pumpkins, watermelons catnip sacks and punchbags, and boxes rubbed with different scents.

Such enrichment is vital for keeping our inquisitive residents mentally and physically stimulated, but most of all just having fun!

The different themes throughout the year mean different ideas for thing the cats will find in their habitats.

This Halloween, will you sponsor a treat for one of the Sanctuary residents?

It’s a simple thing but these treats can mean the world to animals.

Who can forget the Spice Girls, tigers Luna, Jade, Sun and Moon, tearing around with catnip sacks and tearing down their Halloween hay bales? Or, Ruben’s special Halloween when he collected the pumpkins?

Our Halloween appeal is also an important way of helping with the day-to-day care of the animals.

On average, it costs $2,000 / £1,485 each month per animal for food, care, veterinary treatment, maintenance, and security. That’s $68/£50 per day. That’s why, we ask for a little something extra with each Halloween treat donation, to go towards each resident’s care.

  • Halloween Treat Sponsor – $15 / £10 – covers the cost of a pumpkin or other fangtastic treat and a contribution towards a lion or tiger’s care.
  • Halloween ‘Golden’ Treat Sponsor – $68 / £50 – provides a pumpkin or other spooktacular treat and one full day of care for a resident.
  • ‘One-For-All’ Halloween Sponsor – $250 / £186 – a pumpkin or other eeriesistible treat and care contribution for every lion and tiger at ADIWS.
