Animal news from around the world

A month after his companion Tanya passed away from cancer, dear Tarzan has reunited with his beloved and peacefully surrounded by the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary team, gathered to say goodbye. As we mourn the loss of these two inspirational warriors, we remember the loyalty and devotion which helped them through the hell of the circus and saw them come home to Africa to enjoy their golden years in peace. Watch how love conquered all for Tarzan and Tanya

Colombia’s Plenary Chamber of the Constitutional Court unanimously endorsed Law 2385 of 2024, which prohibits bullfighting in Colombia, affirming the law is constitutional. The Court also extended the ban to other public spectacles involving abuse, such as cockfights, corralejas (anyone in the audience runs after bulls and attacks them with various objects), and coleo (a practise derived from the vaquería where bulls are knocked down from a horse). The Court has allowed a three-year period for implementation. ADI applauds the Court’s decision – it has taken years of lobbying in Congress, evidence given in hearings, street activism, organizing public events, and presenting interventions to defend the law against the various constitutional challenges which were filed. The animals won!

Make-up, hair products, fragrances, lotions, soaps, and more often come with a cost: animal suffering. Cosmetic tests typically involve administering a substance to an animal either orally, by injection, or onto their skin, and then observing signs of damage to the immediate area or organs. These experiments are not only cruel and unnecessary, but each species reacts differently to substances, making animal tests an unreliable way to predict effects in humans. Help pass the Humane Cosmetics Act to restrict animal testing in the US.

There have been positive moves to stop greyhound racing in a number of countries. In Scotland, the government is now backing a bill to ban this cruel sport.  In Wales, the government has established an implementation group to guide introduction of the ban this autumn, closing the country’s last racing track. The Government of Tasmania has announced a phase out of funding greyhound racing, effectively ending the sport by 2029. The island has three greyhound racing tracks which are almost entirely reliant on government funding.

The ADI Wildlife Sanctuary is home to creatures large and small, including our rescued lions and tigers. All are part of the ADI rescued animal family. Tulip had a visit from veterinarian Dr Peter Caldwell after she started limping and had less interest in her food. Given a thorough check up she was prescribed pain medication, anti-inflammatories and bed rest for her slightly swollen leg which could be causing her pain. Now quite an age, Tulip contently spends her day strolling around the Chris Lee garden at the Sanctuary, accompanied by her chicken friends Bruce, Harriot and Rose.

Fur farming has been illegal in the UK since 2000 but import of fur continues. Animals on fur farms live their entire lives in intensive conditions, cramped, barren cages on wire floors. MP Ruth Jones’ private member’s bill, the Fur (Import and Sale) Bill, is expected to have a second reading in November. Contact your MP and ask for their support of the bill; remind them fur farming was banned in the UK due to the suffering caused.

Confined in cramped, filthy cages. Standing on painful wire floors. Cruelly killed in front of their families. Minks are intelligent, sentient animals who experience fear, pain, and distress. Millions suffer and die horrific deaths on fur farms. The Mink VIRUS Act would end mink farming in the US. Urge your Congress members to support the Act (HR2185) to phase out mink farming nationwide.

After growing outrage, Lawson Research Institute at St. Joseph’s Health Care in Ontario is ending its use of puppies in cardiac research. The experiments involved inducing heart attacks, monitoring recovery, then removing their hearts for further analysis – unethical and unnecessary. Due to species differences, tests on animals have been shown to produce unreliable and misleading results. It’s time to end the use of dogs in experiments and adopt humane, human-relevant alternatives. Lawson Research are considering re-homing the dogs. Please urge them to rehome all the surviving dogs to loving families. Email LawsonResearch@sjhc.london.on.ca or call 519 646-6005.

The UK Government’s figures say 5,000 primates are kept in private ownership across the UK. In England, the licensing scheme for private ownership of primates will come into effect in April 2026, but the plans for restricting private ownership in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland remain unclear. It is well-known that the climate in the UK is not suitable for primates, and artificial environments cannot replicate the climate, variety and interest of their natural environments. This means their welfare is ALWAYS compromised. Launched on International Primate Day on September 1, join our call to ban the keeping of primates as pets across the UK.

Primates belong in the wild, not in captivity. The Captive Primate Safety Act, HR 3199 / SB 1594, would ban the interstate and foreign trade, private possession, and breeding of monkeys, chimpanzees, lemurs, and other nonhuman primates in the U.S. Primates taken from their families suffer psychologically from the unnatural environment in human homes and this often leads to abnormal behaviors. A human dwelling and human companionship cannot provide primates with the communication, environmental, and mental stimulation they require to develop normal primate behaviors essential to their well-being. Launched on International Primate Day on September 1, urge your Representative to support and co-sponsor the Captive Primate Safety Act.

Thurles racecourse in Tipperary, Ireland is to close following the retirement of the owners of the country’s only privately owned racecourse. Each track closure is a win for horses, and a step closer to ending this barbaric activity. At the Cartmel races in Cumbria, 10-year-old horse Wbee collapsed mid-race with a “sudden heart-related condition”, crashing into the barrier and spectators, and died on site. At the Sodexo Live! Handicap at Ascot Excellent Echo collided with another horse and fell a furlong from the finish. The 3-year-old fractured his leg and was euthanized. In the US, two-year-old Hidden Speed was fatally injured at Los Alamitos Race Course and subsequently euthanized. He is the 18th horse to die at this track this year.

More horses paying the ultimate price for entertainment.  Do not attend or bet on horse races and speak out on social media. This is not “sport” — it is cruelty. It’s time to end horse racing and protect these animals from needless suffering.

Between January–March this year, over 100 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa, 65 within national parks. In the last decade, almost 10,000 rhinos have been killed across the continent to meet the demand for their horns. Trade in Vietnam and China continues to threaten the survival of all five species of African and Asian rhino. Trade in rhino horn is banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), but the perceived value of the product encourages restricted in-country trade in the animals’ natural range, as well as poaching for the illegal trade. Urge your political representatives in the UK I US to support measures to tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

Dr Caldwell conducted a series of checks last week on Sasha after the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary Resident Welfare Team were slightly concerned when she was leaving some of her food. Although Sasha often does this as the weather starts to get warmer, it is always good for the residents to have regular check-ups to test in case of any underlying health issues. In this instance, Sasha passed her blood tests and Dr Caldwell was especially pleased with the increased mobility Sasha is showing on her right leg, where he replaced damaged cancerous bone with a titanium plate. Sasha is now putting her full weight on the leg. The only slight concern is signs of cataracts in both her eyes, which is something common amongst our circus survivors due to early age malnutrition. Dr Caldwell has prescribed supplements to hopefully slow down further degeneration. Sasha was up and about as normal the following day.

Online content showing cruelty to cats is often traced back to underground networks in China, but abusers have also been traced in the UK.  Awareness of efforts to stop this sickening cruelty is reaching the main media, and the BBC has reported evidence of British members of the network to ADI and colleagues in the Feline Guardians UK coalition to press social media platforms to identify, report, and block the cruelty videos. To help, please do NOT watch, engage, comment, tag, or share online animal cruelty content – your disapproval can also increase their engagement. Report it directly to the platforms and to ADI at whistleblower@ad-international.org

Foie gras is one of the cruelest practices in the farming industry. Ducks and geese are force-fed huge amounts of grain several times a day, causing their livers to swell up and become sick and distended, causing difficulties in breathing, walking, grooming and even drinking. Once their livers reach twice the normal size and more than 10 times normal weight, they are slaughtered. In New Jersey Bill A5587 aims to prohibit forcibly feeding goose, duck, or other poultry by using a tube or other apparatus inserted in the beak, bill, or throat of the bird for production of foie gras, as well as the trade, distribution, and sale of foie gras in the state. If you live in NJ, please contact your NJ assembly member and urge their support on A5587 and call the committee Chair’s office and ask them to bring A5587 to a vote: Assemblyman William Spearman: 856-853-2960

Wherever you live, request establishments to remove foie gras if see on for sale.

Clearing tropical forests isn’t just an environmental crisis – it’s deadly for humans, too. A new study reveals that rising temperatures caused by deforestation have led to over 28,000 heat-related deaths per year, totaling more than half a million since 2001. Most of the deaths occurred in Southeast Asia, with significant numbers in tropical Africa and the Americas. Researchers say keeping forests intact not only helps the planet, but saves lives, reduces heat stress, brings rain, and supports communities. Deforestation isn’t just a local issue – it’s a global health emergency.

ADI has confirmed that Garden Bros Nuclear Circus has ended animal acts. Thank you to all our supporters who reached out to Garden Bros and urged them to make this compassionate decision. However, pony rides continue—and the same problems remain – these ponies are not pets, they are tools for the show. Welfare is always compromised. We encourage you to send a message to Garden Bros—congratulate their ending performing animal acts and urge them to make it their policy to not use any animals in their events fun@gardenbroscircus.com.

Cody Roberts, the man who allegedly hit a wolf with his snowmobile, bound and dragged her into a bar, took photos mocking her suffering, and later shot her, has been indicted on felony animal cruelty charges. He not only inflicted horrific suffering on the wolf—known as Hope—but also participated in images of her torment which were widely shared online, glorifying the torture.

This act was not an isolated crime. It is part of the wider persecution of wolves—hunted, trapped, and tormented for “sport.” This is no sport; hunting is to satisfy a bloodlust. Contact your Congress members and urge them to oppose the following bills, which would reduce protection of wolves: H.R. 130 (Trust the Science Act), HR 845 (Pet and Livestock Protection Act), HR 4255 Enhancing Safety for Animals Act of 2025, and US: S. 1306.
